Care and Maintenance

During the fabrication process of your countertops, the edges and surface of the EcoTop are usually sanded to a 220 grit and polished to a satin luster. The EcoTop Finish is applied as the final step during fabrication and installation--this is a non-toxic, clear water-based vegetable oil/carnauba wax emulsion that is spread by hand and then buffed with a soft cloth.

The Finish provides a durable, warm soft looking luster and a sacrificial wear layer on the countertop that adds to the already excellent abrasion resistance and stain resistance of the EcoTop. It also adds richness to the color of the countertops.

Regular 'daily' care is to simply wipe and dry the surface. Especially on the darker colors in hard water areas, it is important to wipe up standing water so that no mineral deposits develop IN THE FINISH. No further steps are required for regular care.

Periodically--which can be as frequently as every 3 months or as long as 2 or 3 years depending on wear and use--it may be desirable to refresh the surface of the Finish because it has dulled or is holding some stains or hard water marks. An excellent technique is to use a wet, worn, clean green scrubby pad with BonAmi (or similar) cleanser in a paste, rubbing lightly with a circular motion. Rinse and dry to remove the paste. When dry, apply a new coat of the EcoTop Finish and buff. This process will return the counters to a like new appearance in a very easy process. If the surface is just dull, but not stained or scuffed, then simply clean, dry, and apply another thin coat of the Finish and buff.

If surface damage from exceptionally hard wear has occurred or if someone has cut on the countertop instead of a cutting board, lightly scorched it with a hot pan, or deeply scratched it by dragging a rough cast iron utensil or similar across it, then the surface can be sanded out and then recoated with the Finish. The required grit (or multiple grits) will depend on the severity of the damage and should be evaluated by an experienced installer/fabricator or woodworker. Although it won't effect the color or overall consistent appearance, it is important to NOT sand too deeply on a scratch without 'feathering out' the sanding to maintain a flat (or level) surface. In other words, don't sand a dip or divot into the countertop.

You can be confident that EcoTop is a very tough, very hard wearing, durable, highly stain resistant choice for many residential and commercial applications. EcoTop is an extremely high performance countertop material and doesn't require special care or babying.
